Five movies to cheer you up when you're feeling down

One of my favourite ever book/movie characters, Bridget Jones, slobbing out in front of the TV!

Today I've been sitting at my laptop attempting to write something half-decent for you all but the words just won't come. I think it's because I've already written a couple of posts about losing my Dad and I don't want to depress you or make anyone think this is becoming a 'grief blog'.

My aim with all my posts is to write something that's enjoyable and inspiring to read whilst offering an insight into my little world for anyone who's interested. It's incredibly important to me that this blog is an honest reflection of the real me and my real life but I also don't think it will be of much use to anyone if I start churning out lots of "how will I ever get through this" style posts.

So... with that in mind I thought I'd share a little happiness today and try to cheer myself up in the process. I've never done one of these 'top 5 / 10' style posts before but I do love a good list and I really enjoy reading these types of posts on other blogs, so I thought I'd give it a whirl!

I'm a passionate movie-goer and DVD watcher, as is Chris and my whole family. We all love to curl up on a Sunday night and watch a great film together, or go to the cinema, and then discuss the film afterwards. In fact, this is something I loved to do with my Dad and it makes me feel happy to remember all the times we did just that.

Here are my top picks for happy, uplifting films to give you a boost when you're feeling low...

1. Begin Again

Yes it stars Keira Knightley and yes it's a bit cheesy but neither of those things should get in the way of you enjoying this sweet and uplifting movie. It's about fresh starts, overcoming setbacks, and making unlikely friends. The lead characters each find themselves in a bit of a rut in life and bravely try something new to try and break out and find happiness again. I loved the theme of making it against the odds and the music is great too.

2. Untouchable

This is one of those films that makes you glad to be alive. It's French with English subtitles but don't let that put you off. It's a wonderful true story about second-chances and how helping someone else can actually help you and perhaps even change your life for the better. A young guy, unemployed and living on a rough urban estate, somehow finds himself working as a carer to a wealthy quadriplegic. The result is a special and unusual relationship bringing together two very different people facing completely different life challenges. This joyful story left me feeling grateful and blessed for all the good things in my life.

3. Midnight in Paris

I adore love this movie! It's a dreamy and playful film with a bit of time travelling thrown in for good measure - usually something I dislike intensely but here it totally works. I love the art and literature references, and the on-screen chemistry with  lead actors Owen Wilson and Marion Cotilliard is endearing and believable. This magical movie reminds you that life is an adventure and to always follow your heart.

4. The Family Man

Nicholas Cage is one of my favourite actors and this is a great Christmas movie that can be enjoyed any time of year. It's the classic Dickensian story with your typical rich, isolated protagonist who thinks his life is just fine thank you very much until he is shown how wonderfully things could have turned out if he'd made different choices. It's an amusing and  heart-warming reminder that the most valuable things in life are family and good friends.

5. Erin Brockovich

After seeing this movie you will want to leap off the sofa and find a cause worth fighting for! Julia Roberts' performance playing the real life Erin Brockovich is outstanding and she shows that anyone can make a real difference in the world if they are determined enough. If you are struggling to believe you can achieve something meaningful in your life / career watch this film and you will believe you can.

What films never fail to uplift and inspire you?! 1. Great Blog again Celia! Totally agree how some films can lift your spirits! Bridget Jones, It's a Wonderful Life & Gone with the Wind are 3 of my top all-time Films. We all see a film & feel emotions about them in different ways & it is fun to talk & swap feelings about the film. Chris really encouraged me to watch Foreign films with subtitles, something I had always discounted & it wasn't long before I realised how I would have missed out on some great films & TV series So looking forward to more of your Blogs with anticipation.
